Abstract
The discipline of athletic training is one which deals with the prevention and care of athletic injuries. Athletic training is a competitive field that is oriented towards athletes and sports medicine caregivers. Certain types of personalities mold athletic trainers and the types of lifestyles necessary to do this line of work. To better determine what types of prospective athletic trainers enter this field, it is interesting to find out if they fit certain personality characteristics. The purpose of this study was to examine the personality traits of athletic trainers from accredited universities affiliated with the Ohio Valley Conference. A total of 92 subjects entered and completed a personality survey known as the Big Five Inventory personality test. Upon completion of each survey, they were scored using the Big Five Inventory model. A Statistical Package for Social Sciences was used to determine if any significant similarities or differences existed among athletic trainers in different categories. Factors taken into account were: gender, experience, and affiliated university. This study concluded that athletic trainers in the Ohio Valley Conference do possess certain personalities that are consistent with one another.
