Abstract
The purpose of this research study was to determine if two different types of narrative observation notes impacted supervisee clinical behaviors. Narrative observation notes alone and narrative observation notes coupled with objective data were used as the independent variables. Sixteen supervisees and 5 supervisors participated in the study. The supervisees were divided into two numerically even groups of eight and provided with one of the independent variables.
The study consisted of eleven total therapy sessions, with the first three sessions providing baseline data and the following eight involved administration of the independent variables. Group one received narrative observation notes alone and group two received narrative observation notes coupled with objective data. The target behaviors focused on during the treatment sessions were use of informative/specific feedback by supervisees and use of goal directed behavior by supervisees during clinical therapy sessions. Each supervisee was assigned one target behavior immediately following the baseline sessions. The target behaviors were measured over the duration of the study using videotaped samples that were analyzed using equations to determine a percentage of occurrence of the target behavior. Using a time series design results suggested that both independent variables impacted the target behaviors assigned to the supervisees. Results suggested that group two's narrative observation notes coupled with objective data created greater, more efficient, and more effective change overall. These findings suggested that the use of objective data within narrative observation notes when providing feedback to supervisees may be one form of efficiently and effectively changing clinical behaviors.
