Abstract
Way Station is a two-act play that tells the story of eight disparate characters who share a common pastime, drinking in a small-town tavern. They each frequent the bar for different reasons; however, they are all attempting their escape from their lives on the outside. For one of the characters, the Way Station becomes a prison house from which there is no breaking out. The bar patrons are in on a lucrative cover-up, but have they been paid enough to buy off their collective conscience?
The creative writing thesis contained here consists of an introduction followed by Way Station, a play in two acts. The introduction details the impetus for writing the play, my aims and aspirations within the play, and the dramatic tradition in which the play fits. I briefly discuss each of the eight characters in the introduction, as well as the plot, setting, and themes, though it is my sincere hope that the play is capable of doing most of the talking for itself. I also discuss other plays that share similar settings and themes. These similarities have helped me see just how the world of drama is connected and continues to grow.
