Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate variables that may impact the ratings of job satisfaction by practicing Illinois K-12 teachers specifically examining if the variables of occupational roles, burnout, efficacy, and other relevant covariates are correlated and/or have predictive utility on teacher job satisfaction. A secondary goal was to raise awareness about the stressors teachers face in their work environments. Survey materials included a demographics questionnaire, an occupational roles catalog, the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale, and the Teacher Job Satisfaction Scale. Seventy-six practicing Illinois K-12 teachers completed the study. Results of the current study yielded moderate levels of burnout, a considerable amount of efficacy, and moderate reports of job satisfaction. Additionally, teachers reported spending the most time lecturing, although behavior management was rated as the most difficult. Burnout was found to be negatively associated with both teacher efficacy and job satisfaction. Furthermore, it was positively associated with time spent managing students’ behavior. Regarding the predictive value of study measures on job satisfaction, both burnout and teacher efficacy were found to significantly predict job satisfaction. In contrast, time spent managing behaviors did not. A secondary goal to the current study was raising awareness for teachers. Through study findings some actionable insights for schools may include creating beneficial interventions for teachers targeting increasing or continuing teacher well-being, addressing the school climate, behavior management, professional development, addressing the effect of student behavior management and/or time allocation of teacher roles, and the overall betterment of teachers and the teaching profession.
