Abstract
The purpose of this study is to make a comparative analysis of Greenup and Toledo, Illinois. The intent is to investigate and compare the historical origin, reasons for settlement, early development, growth patterns, industry, lines of transportation, and elements of similarity and difference between the towns.
Included in the study are interpretations presented as to why the towns grew up so close together, why one became larger than the other, why the one became the county-seat and still remained smaller, how industry and transportation are important to these communities, and the ultimate character which has evolved for each community. Also investigated is the importance of agriculture in the economy of Greenup and Toledo, and an explaination why their population is increasing in the face of a decreasing county population.
