Abstract

My intention in painting and drawing is to demonstrate luminous effects in an atmospheric field.

In painting, attention is directed to various color impressions. A color may be perceived as iridescent, metallic, filmy, voluminous, hard, etc. Also, an overall tinted atmosphere establishes a misty field in which these color impressions are displayed. A systematically prepared palette of adjusted colors is then formed. The idea is a planned color effect transforming design elements.

In drawing, light and dark contrast control sets the illumination character. Various graphitic media are used to render atmospheric perspective and delineate objects in space. Impressions of texture, solidity, and filminess are implied through technique. Color, when used, heightens the visual effect in contrast with achromatic values and linearity.

Whether the painting or drawing is realistic or abstract, the illumination character sets the stage for visual illusions. This general field of view controls all impressions and design elements. Perception is the visual agent in their construction. So, different color principles were studied to demonstrate most of these illusions. Then, the eye of the mind activates the “illuminusions”.

Thus, the object of this thesis is to present the reader some theory and makeup behind the “illuminusion” series. Working methods are explicated with photographs and illustrations to convey this thought. Hopefully, the reader will “see” “illuminusions”. Insight into perception, problems of media, technique, and especially color control will serve as guides.

It must be kept in mind that this concept is an ideal. The works are young and developing. For an artist it is not enough to know about the findings of new sciences; more important is the application of principles. This matter is of practical resolution. Working knowledge requires experience and time.
