Abstract
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of this field experience is to revise and update the policy handbook for the Board of Education at Cowden-Herrick High School District #188. The handbook currently available is unorganized, contains outdated policies, and is not utilized at board meetings. Thus, it is anticipated that the results of this study will aid the board members in their capacity as decision makers, and further strengthen the foundation upon which the educational program of the district is based.
Procedure
While this field study is specifically directed toward the policies of Cowden-Herrick High School District #188, the writer believes it may be readily modified to serve the purposes and interests of Cowden-Herrick Elementary District #11, or other districts wishing to revise or reorganize their policy handbooks. It is divided into three chapters.
Chapter one describes the problems inherent in the present policy handbook used by Cowden-Herrick High School, as well as background information on policy revision and certain limitations to the study.
Chapter two provides additional information to further justify the study , and a review of current literature on policy revision and reorganization. An ERIC search, using "School Board Policy" as a descriptor, revealed very little current information on actual policies developed to cope with today’s changing school environment. Therefore, discussion is confined to the general need for and benefits of written policy, methods and processes of development and revision, and various procedures utilized in organizing and coding the handbook.
Chapter three presents the summary, conclusions, and recommendations for improvement.
