Abstract
This presentation will draw from the presenters’ personal and professional knowledge and experiences as African American women, Black female college students (past and present), and as college counselors and licensed professional counselors to address the Black female college students’ social development, mental health, and emotional well-being, and the impact of all three on their mental health. The presenters will also share prevention and intervention strategies for working with Black female college students. The workshop will be grounded in real cases and experiences of the presenters and the audience and will provide opportunities and safe spaces for the Black females and others from different cultural and gendered backgrounds to share their stories. Resources will be provided and shared.

Session Objectives: The participants will:
1. Become aware of mental health challenges facing Black females by sharing personal stories
2. Be able to discuss gender issues experienced by Black female Students
3. Know the role counselors play in identifying prevention and intervention strategies
4. Understand the implications for college counselors working with Black female students

Speaker Information
R. Patrice Dunn is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor in Texas and the owner of Real Life Counseling and Consultation Services PLLC. She is currently a Doctoral Candidate in the Counselor Education program at Texas Tech University. Her research interest involves Black American women faculty attending Predominately White Institutions. She has presented at the local, state, and national level on topics including digital storytelling, counselors and social media, ethical boundaries, and gun violence in schools, parent engagement. As an encourager, teacher, confidant, change-maker, listener, facilitator, mediator, mentor, and role model she is passionate and committed to making sure that the voices of Black women at PWI’s are heard.
Valerie Harrison, M.S., LPC-S is the owner of Vitality Livin' Counseling and Coaching. She received a Master of Science in Counseling from the University of Arkansas and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Lamar University. She has experience as a college, high school, crisis, and private practice counselor. Valerie has practiced in the public schools for over fifteen years. She has attended numerous conferences, training, and workshops on adolescent development. Valerie is passionate about helping students confront and change faulty thinking patterns and identify strengths to assist them in their pursuit of personal growth.
