Abstract
Dominican University, a Hispanic Serving Institution located just outside of Chicago, launched its successful career development program in the fall of 2017 in the Brennan School of Business. The program, composed of four required career development courses, a required internship, and built-in mentorship with Executives in Residence, was embedded into the curriculum for all undergraduate business students with faculty, administrative and staff support. Since the launch of the program, graduate outcomes have increased exponentially, with 77% of 2021 Brennan graduates employed or attending graduate programs three months post-graduation. Due to the success of the program, Dominican is currently working to expand the curriculum to the rest of the university, with a pilot planned for Fall 2022.
Description
As a Hispanic-Serving Institution, Dominican University is focused on promoting a social justice mission of equity and access. To achieve that mission, Dominican supports a primarily low-income, first-generation population. In fact, for the 2020–2021 academic year, 100% of all incoming freshmen received some form of financial aid. The Brennan Career Development Program was created to be fundamentally equitable, as all students, regardless of major, must complete an internship prior to graduation. The career development program works diligently to connect students with opportunities that require a bachelor’s degree to promote upward mobility and advancement.
Due to the success of the program, Dominican University is consistently ranked in the top 20 of Midwest Regional Universities according to U.S. News & World Report. Dominican is ranked #1 in the Chicago area and #3 in the Midwest in the “Top Performers in Social Mobility” category. The university is one of only two schools in the country within the Regional University category to be ranked among the top #10 overall and as an exemplar in social mobility.
Because of the success this program, Dominican University is working to expand career development across the university through a Higher Learning Commission quality initiative and a Title V grant focused on expanding and transforming career development services, aligning curricula with employer needs, and improving the financial literacy for our students. We have already started working with other departments to bring Brennan’s unique curriculum to students regardless of major or program of study.
The presentation will give an overview of Brennan’s career development program, share relevant details about embedding career development in the curriculum and working with faculty, and discuss student outcomes and building an employer pipeline. We hope this equitable model can inspire similar institutions to weigh the benefits of embedding career development into curriculum.
