Abstract

Dominant culture viewing is a major problem in society today. Members of the dominant culture tend to ignore any point of view from the minority cultures that are present in the world today. This practice of ignoring minority problems are even present in the practice of reading. In the presentation “Reading in a way to Improve Diversity Awareness” a method called disidentification is taught to show a new method of reading. Using disidentification as a reading tool could help change the way members of the dominant culture read items of literature to allow them to see the point of views of minority group members. Thusly, helping create a world where the dominant culture can be more open-minded and better educated of issues minority groups face every day.

Description

The target audience for my presentation “Reading in a way to Improve Diversity Awareness” is anyone who is willing to learn about disidentifcation that is over the age of 18. I say over the age of 18 simply because the text used in the presentation is violently graphic, but this could be swapped for another text to make it minor-friendly. The main learning objective of this presentation is to teach people how to use disidentifcation while reading or even viewing literature in a way that allows them to see the situations presented from the point of view of someone from a minority group. The overall objective is to show how disidentifcation can make a difference in how dominant group members view the world and the media they watch to see how it can be viewed from a minority group member’s point of view. Then the member of the dominant group can take that point of view and make a difference in the world based on how that point of view changed their feelings about the item they read or viewed. This presentation connects to Making Excellence Inclusive because it teaches a new way of learning about diversity. This presentation’s goal of teaching a way of viewing literature that can open people’s eyes to common everyday problems that minority groups face directly correlates with the theme of Making Excellence Inclusive. It does this by allowing a new way to see diversity and by teaching a method that allows the common member of the dominant group to see how being non-inclusive impacts others. It also allows college students, and all members of teaching faculty to learn a new way of making their lessons or their ways of learning more inclusive to all those they interact with. My general hope is that people will take what they learned from this presentation and try to make a difference within the world moving it one more step closer to being more accepting and inclusive. Before the presentation, I will have the audience read a poem with no background information. Then after the presentation, I will have them read the same poem using disidentification and give the story behind the poem. To finish we will talk about the differences between reading the poem with and without disidentifcation and how their views changed using the method.
