Abstract
I report how children’s and young adult non-fiction and fiction books (mis)represent lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, ally, pansexual (hereafter, LGBTQ+) themes and people. I have published research on LGBTQ+ representations within books for elementary children as well as for high school students. I have also explored patterns of book challenges (challenges are registered complaints that have the intent to ban the books) by parents and citizens resistant to the inclusion of LGBTQ+ themes and people within literature in schools and local libraries. I use separate examples for high school and elementary by integrating literacy tasks and literature texts on, respectively, Matthew Shepard and families.
