Abstract

Post secondary educational institutions are increasingly becoming aware of how non cognitive (academic) barriers can and in too many cases do impact student success negatively. This presentation will focus on how Marion Technical College has addressed this issue. The presenter will discuss how a food pantry and clothing closet were created. She will also discuss the role of a student resource navigator in helping address non cognitive barriers.

Description

This presentation focuses on the importance of addressing non cognitive (academic) barriers and how doing so can have a positive effect on student success and well being. Additionally, in addressing such issues, students experience more of a sense of belonging which research indicates leads to increased student motivation, persistence and ultimately graduation rates.

The presentation aligns with MEI objectives and conference themes as it raises awareness regarding some of the diverse challenges non traditional students may experience. It also relates to the issue of belonging which is one of the categories MEI focuses on.

The target audience is primarily student support personnel although the presentation provides valuable information for all those involved in post secondary education.

The learning objectives/ outcomes are as follows:

Compile a list of and discuss non cognitive (academic) barriers which hinder student success.

Identify and discuss resources which help address non cognitive (academic) barriers.

Assess the value of addressing non cognitive (academic) barriers in increasing student success.

Note to reviewer: Please note that what I am submitting as the "full text presentation" is only part of what I'd present. I am yet to complete creating the full PPT presentation.
