The Struggle for Resources

The 34th Annual Conference of the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions, The Struggle for Resources, was held April 15-17, 2007 in New York City.

Introduction

The new stability and growth of the National Center have been dramatic. Attendance at the National Conference has increased by ten percent annually during the last seven years. Over three hundred and twenty-five academic administrators, union leaders, and scholars attended the 2007 conference, which was the largest gathering in the National Center’s history (despite a “two hundred year” storm).

The National Center’s unique mission is to represent all constituents in academic collective bargaining in each of its endeavors – the National Advisory Board; the National Conference; the forthcoming Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy; the Directory of Faculty Contracts and Bargaining Agents; the National Conference itself. The Center thus provides an environment for lively conversation, analysis, and ponderings about academic labor and the future of the academy. And although held in New York City, the 2007 National Conference’s attendees represented twenty-eight states and Canada. University presidents, local administrators, and union leaders made presentations. Contingent academic colleagues as well as members of the Federal Higher Education Commission spoke. Few academic conferences present such a vibrant geographic, institutional, and constituent mix. This unique mix is the basis of the National Center’s success.

The 2007 National Conference topic, The Struggle for Resources, was discussed in twenty-nine panels and workshops. The presentations varied from traditional academic papers to Power Point displays. The Conference Program serves as the Table of Contents for the Proceedings.
