Abstract
In the wild, the umbrella magnolia is found in forests from Pennsylvania south to Georgia and west to Arkansas and Mississippi. It prefers moist soil along mountain streams and edges of swamps (Callaway 1994). As broad as its range, it is never common.

Comments
From where or whom obtained and when: In the late 1960’s, seed was obtained from Joe McDaniel of a selected form of umbrella magnolia obtained from a Detroit, Michigan grower who had purchased the mother plant from a Pennsylvanian nursery to be used as an under stock. This tree proved to have larger and thicker leaves and larger flowers than normal, and the cultivar name ‘Bloomfield’ was given to it. In addition, seedlings were obtained from wild plant collectors in the mountains of the southeastern United States.
