Description
These findings affirm that community organizations play a large and measurable role in fostering civic engagement among their members. Greek letter organizations in particular are a powerful driver of engagement; they function as small scale democratic spaces where members are able to develop the habits that translate into consistent voting. These results support the frameworks laid out by Putnam and Skocpol which argue that the health of American democracy depends on citizens having an active civic life. Individuals who are embedded in such organizations are more likely to show up and engage with their communities. Moreover, these commitments to democracy and engaging with community deepen over time. Supporting community organizations is an integral part of upholding democracy and high voter participation rates in the United States.
