With much of the World moving towards more egalitarian views and rights for women, East Asia, and specifically Japan remain a curious case. As a highly developed democracy, it still falls flat in areas of female political participation when compared to other high functioning democracies due to traditionalist gender norms. These gender norms may negatively impact political participation amongst Japanese women.
