Abstract

In this paper I will be looking at Young Adult Fantasy texts in which their protagonist is magically differentiated from his world. I will argue that this protagonist, and those similar, can be analyzed as textually coded as neurodiverse due to his interactions with the other characters in his story and his society at large, as well as having experiences common to neurodiverse people in reality. Further, I will be arguing that the character can function within the definition of neuroqueer as defined by M. Remi Yergeau. These argumentations will be developed alongside each other with the idea of queer-coding acting as a foundational framework, Authoring Autism by M. Remi Yergeau as a foundational guiding text, and my own experience as a neurodivergent individual for additional support in developing these analyses and arguments.
