Edgar N. Transeau came to Eastern Illinois Normal School in 1907, replacing Otis W. Caldwell. He taught Botany 1 & 2, Advanced Morphology of Algae and Fungi, Ecological Anatomy, Local Flora, General Principles of Evolution, the Green Algae, and Agriculture.
When Transeau left Eastern in 1915, his students H.C. Sampson and L.H. Tiffany followed him to The Ohio State University where the three collaborated on the widely used Textbook of Botany. Transeau served at The Ohio State University from 1915 until his retirement in 1946.
