Description
The Charleston Riot took place on March 28, 1864 on the courthouse square in Charleston, Illinois. A brawl between a contingent of Union soldiers at home on leave and a group of southern sympathizers known as Copperheads, the riot erupted quickly, and within a few minutes nine people were killed and a dozen wounded—one of the bloodiest skirmishes in the north during the entire Civil War. Recorded in the book displayed here are transcripts of depositions taken in the Coles County Circuit Court from a variety of individuals who were involved in the riot or who witnessed it. The transcripts were compiled in 1939 by Eastern Illinois State College History Professor Charles H. Coleman.
