Betty Jo (Moore) Armstead was a 1953 graduate of Eastern Illinois Teachers College. She earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics. In 1954, she accepted a job with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the predecessor to NASA. Moore spent the next 28 years with the space agency as a computer engineer before retiring and entering the private sector in 1984. The September 1962 edition of the Eastern Alumus lists Betty Jo as the head of the IBM 7090 computer systems at Nasa's Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. She died in 2019 at the age of 88.
