Abstract
Through the use of various forms of media, "sexting" has become a phrase common in contemporary society. Although the definition has varied through the past years, a recent study by Elizabeth Eraker (2010) stated, "sexting refers to the self-production and distribution by cell phone of sexually explicit images in the course of consensual, voluntary activity by teenagers" (p. 557). The purpose of this research was to assess the frequency of sexting, attitudes regarding sexting, and the beliefs to engage in sexting among the college population. The current study ( 1) examined the frequency of sexting among college students, (2) explored the attitudes regarding the activity of sexting among college students, and (3) examined the beliefs of those that sext.
The Woolard Sexting Questionnaire was distributed to college students of all ages (18 years and older). The researcher created a 22- question survey that was dispersed through the Survey Monkey website. The survey consisted of demographic questions, questions referring to the frequency of sending and receiving messages and/or pictures, attitudes regarding sexting, and beliefs regarding the sexting behavior.
The data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages. The study showed students are participating in the sexting behavior and find it entertaining. In addition, students feel sexting is an activity that allows individuals to feel more comfortable prior to sexual activities. According to the data, sexting is considered a sexual behavior to the college population.
Further research must focus on the motivations to sext and the high risk populations. Development of educational programs and tac- tics may be used to inform the varying populations of health related issues and unlawful behaviors associated with sexting.
