Description

The “Preachin’ Parkers” are considered to be among the first non-Indian settlers of present-day Coles County, moving here from Crawford County, IL, in 1824. e patriarch of the clan was Elder John, who was born in Maryland, served two stints in the Revolutionary War, and migrated with his family to Virginia, Georgia and Tennessee before coming to Illinois. Devout Hardshell or Predestinarian Baptists, the Parkers, it is said, felt called by God to spread His Word throughout the countryside. This exhibit displays the family tree of Elder John and Sarah Parker and their 13 children.
