Abstract

Storage facilities for library materials can range from a small room within a library to specially constructed high density remote storage facilities. This poster session will consider the issues surrounding the efficient operation of a storage facility. Topics covered will include the selection of materials to be placed in storage, the shelving arrangement in the facility, the cataloging and relabeling of storage bound items, and the moving of materials to the storage facility. Other issues considered will be shelf-reading, shifting, security and climate control, and retrieval of storage items for patrons. The poster session will be based on Booth Library, Eastern Illinois University’s decade plus experience operating an off-site storage facility.
